NB: This post launches my “First on Facebook” category, where I will pull up some of my old posts from Facebook and repost them here. But this time, I will revisit these posts because some of them will be in relation to my upcoming post over the weekend. in this case, about TV5. This post was originally posted on FB on 16 February.
So, maybe someone was listening after all.
After I posted more than a year ago that TV5 should be mining their old IP (intellectual property) in Novaliches for shows that could be produced on the cheap but are top-raters in their own right, TV5 announced that it will revive Sing Galing as part of its 2021 slate.
Good move, TV5, Good move. It is a tried and tested IP that not only fuels the Filipino passion for singing in karaoke bars, but also fuelled TV5’s renaissance as a third network player.
It not only was the original karaoke-based singing contest on Philippine TV, it made stars out of its champions, most famous of which is one Ethel Gabison aka Ethel Booba.
I also think that TV5 should also bring back Allan K. to host the show, he was made for it, he “owned” Sing Galing and he made it the quintessential family game show.
So, would that stop on Sing Galing alone? Absolutely not.
TV5 should continue to mine their old Novaliches IP to good use, It is the era of “something old, something new”, revivals are a sure-fire hit to get an audience that is excessively tired of the same old fare that has been airing on the boob tube already.
As I have written before, TV5 has loads of IP to work out for a decidedly millennial audience, shows like Wow Mali! or Ispup! (Eezy Dancing can be deferred until after the pandemic, once a vaccine is already fully deployed and we are able to get herd immunity), the possibilities are endless for TV5 to produce and create hit shows that are within budget and does not need a stellar cast.
Sure, let Cignal TV do the financing of your shows, (I mean right now its more feasible for our monthly fees to fund shows from the network, like a modified license fee scheme), but TV5 should use that programming brain trust to get the best of the old shows from the golden age of Channel 5, aka the Novaliches era, and make them work in a multiplatform environment.

That way, you can get out of that rabbit hole that is the single-digit ratings ghetto and be more competitive against GMA 7.
And oh, before I forget, since Aniplus Asia is now on Cignal TV (finally after a long wait), maybe Cignal can now partner again to revive Filipino anime content on TV5?
Right now, GMA has a monopoly on airing anime shows, and they suck big time (and yes, I stress on the suck, as in they really really suck) Maybe Robert Galang and co. can revive again the old Aniplus deal that was struck in the old Chot Reyes era and revive it?
